October is Special Needs Law Month: Here’s how you can help

Many people might associate October with one very big holiday: Halloween. But as it so happens, October is also National Special Needs Law Month – an entire month devoted to raising public awareness about the legal rights of those who have special needs. The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) has established this awareness campaign specifically to educate the public about legal advocacy for those who are elderly, disabled, or have special needs.

You may have a family member, friend or loved one who is elderly or disabled. Maybe you have special needs yourself. In either case, you probably know that there are unique challenges to face every single day. It probably isn't easy. It is important to become empowered by learning about the legal services, options, and resources that are available to you.

These are just a few important things that you can do to acknowledge National Special Needs Law Month:

  • Plan for healthcare decision-making
  • Find out how to make a living will
  • Learn about health care proxies, guardians, and conservatorships
  • Give a talk or speech about National Special Needs Law Month
  • Contact local disability advocacy groups
  • Write an editorial for your local newspaper
  • Contact an attorney who has experience in special needs law

Those with special needs as well as their families, friends, and caregivers face unique legal challenges throughout their lives. If you or your loved ones is elderly, disabled, or has special needs, a skilled and caring attorney can offer guidance so that you are not alone.
