Tips for Having "The Talk" with Family Members

Even though it’s important to have a worthwhile conversation, quite often these are the ones that seem to be the most difficult to initiate. Often times there is no help or guide that will help you get started. Here are some insights into starting a conversation with your family member about the idea of moving into a senior living community. The conversation doesn’t need to be a difficult one and being nervous or feeling guilty about bringing up this subject can be a little easier if you read these following tips that we here at Amy B. Van Fossen, P.A., have to share with you.

Talking to Your Parents About Senior Living Communities

Starting a discussion with your parents about having them move into a senior living community can be hard but in the long run it will help to reduce a significant amount of stress and may possibly even prevent a serious emergency. Below are some suggestions you can try to use to help with a smoother conversation when having a talk with a loved one…

  • Do your research and be prepared before your conversation even takes place. This way you can provide them with an abundance of information about senior living, assisted living as well as independent living options.
  • Allow everyone involved to have a role in the matter. Invite everyone involved to talk openly about the options available. Ensure that family member’s concerns are being heard.
  • Have the talk when you are in your best frame of mind. Choose a time when you and your family are ready and feel good. Think about having an outside party join in discussing the matter such as a friend, clergy member or family practitioner.
